About me (the trainer)

This class is led by Valerio Zanini, CST, CSM, CSPO and CPIT. Formerly a Director of Product Development at Capital One where I led several Scrum product teams and launched new multi-million dollar digital products. Now a Certified Scrum Trainer (CST) with Scrum Alliance and a Certified Product Innovation Trainer (CPIT) with Spark Engine, I am the author/co-author of several books on Agile and Product Management: Deliver Great Products That Customers Love, Sprint Your Way to Scrum, and SAFe to Scale.

An experienced Scrum practitioner, I bring more than 20 years of experience building digital products and working with agile teams in different industries. In my classes I share real life stories and best practices to help apply the concepts to real situations.

I help organizations worldwide adopt Scrum, improve product development practices, and increase productivity. I provide consulting and training to organizations of any size, helping them become more innovative with Agile, Scrum, SAFe, product management, and Design Thinking practices. I am also the founder of Truly Scrum, an organization dedicated to support the training and growth of Scrum professionals, including Scrum Masters, Agile Coaches, and Product Owners.

I am a Certified Scrum Trainer (CST), a SAFe Program Consultant (SPC), and a Kanban Management Professional (KMP II).

I bring real life experience from having built and launched digital products in a variety of industries, and having coached Product Management and Scrum teams at different stages of their development journey. I share the real-life experiences with my students for a more effective and realistic learning experience.

I am a Certified Scrum Trainer (CST) with Scrum Alliance and a Certified Product Innovation Trainer (CPIT) with Spark Engine. I have also completed advance training programs for instructors and coaches, including CCTA Level 1 Coach with the Coach Certification Training Academy, Training from the Back of the Room (TBR), and Landmark Self-Expression and Leadership Program (SELP). As a result, my classes are highly interactive, based on on simulations and real-life discussions, rather than boring Powerpoint lectures.

My classes are taught over multiple days to minimize the impact on your work schedule, and also give you more time to absorb concepts. And, I strive to support my students both during the class and after it with follow-up coaching and additional resources to keep learning about Scrum.

Structure of the class

Format: Learn-from-home course (via Zoom) with live instructor USA-based. Learn by doing with practical exercises and simulations. Workbook provided.

3 half-days format: for work-life balance. 5 hours/day.

Max class size: Limited number of students for focused attention with the instructor and more air-time for questions and discussions.

Certification: This class includes the Certified Scrum Master exam administered by the Scrum Alliance for the certification. Upon completion of the class, the students are eligible to take the exam.

What you will learn

This Certified Scrum Master class takes participants through a series of interactive exercises where you can learn and apply first-hand the principles of Scrum. The goal of the class is to learn in-depth the Scrum framework and prepare participants for the CSM certification exam.

• Agile: the Agile Manifesto, Agile VS Waterfall, the mirage of productivity, Agile planning
• Roles: Scrum Master, Product Owner, Developers
• Events: Sprint, Sprint Planning, Daily Scrum, Sprint Review, Sprint Retrospective
• Artifacts: Product Backlog, Sprint Backlog, Product Increment
• Practices: prioritizing your work, establishing a Definition of Done, refinining your Backlog, collaborating with the Product Owner and the Organization, monitoring progress and increasing productivity, technical debt, servant leadership, estimation and planning

You will learn how Scrum exists in a larger organizational context, and how it differs from traditional Waterfall approaches. You will also learn the importance of the Scrum Master within an organization to act as a servant leader, support the team, and drive an Agile transformation.

This class is aligned with the learning objectives of the latest Scrum Guide and the CSM exam.

Going beyond the CSM exam

In addition to learning the foundational elements of Scrum, I want for you to leave the class empowered with the knowledge and the confidence of using Scrum on a real project. You will gain a practical understanding of the roles, artifacts and events of Scrum, via hands-on exercises, discussion, fun games, and simulations.

I run this class in 2 or 3 Sprints. Each Sprint, you will define a Sprint Backlog at Sprint Planning, conduct Daily Scrum, and conclude the Sprint with Sprint Review and Retrospective. You will learn by doing, and we practice Scrum by using it within our class.

Also, participants typically come from a variety of experiences. Those that come to learn Scrum, and those that already have experience with it and come to gain a deeper understanding of how to use if effectively. This variety of experiences makes the class richer and allows us to delve into concepts, best practices, and Scrum patterns that go beyond what is needed for the CSM exam, and that give you the expertise you need to be successful in real life.

This is not for you if

This class is not for you if you are just seeking a quick and cheap way to get the CSM certification: I focus on real learning and effective practices, beyond the certification. My goal is to help people learn how to adopt Scrum effectively and grow in their career.

This class is also not for you if you expect to sit back, relax, and fall asleep while listening to an endless Powerpoint presentation: My class is about learning by doing, not passive assimilation of concepts. We make it fun and interactive, and in the process you learn how to be a good Scrum Master.

Prerequisites

There is no required prior certificate, educational background, or work experience needed to participate in the CSM course, complete the exam, and receive the certification. My Certified Scrum Master course is designed to start from the basics of Scrum, and then quickly transition to more detailed and practical topics to help you develop a deeper understanding of Scrum and Agile.

A few pre-class reading materials are provided before the class starts to get you acquainted to new concepts and applications of Agile and Scrum.

A working computer with microphone and camera is needed to connect via Zoom and participate. Full participation in the class is required for certification.
