About

Dan Rawsthorne is one of the originals; he was selected by Ken Schwaber (co-father of Scrum, co-founder of the Scrum Alliance) to be a Scrum Trainer in 2005. He has taught over 500 courses and flown more than a million miles to certify many thousands of Scrum Masters and Product Owners. He was introduced to Scrum in 1995, but has been developing software using Scrum since 1983 - long before it got its name. Dan, along with Doug Shimp, (another of the originals) has written several books on Scrum, including one of the earliest on 'modern scrum' - the Scrum described by the Scrum Guide (Exploring Scrum: The Fundamentals).

Dan has worked in software for almost 35 years in many capacities, from coder to product/project/program manager. He has worked on small (3 people working on an e-commerce web site) and large (500 people working on aircraft avionics) projects, and has learned many things about what works and what doesn't. He has worked in small "hack it out" companies and big CMM and ISO organizations and has been involved in process improvement and leadership coaching in most of them.

At 3Back, Dan is a transformation agent who helps organizations mature by applying common sense and agile techniques. His PhD in mathematics guides Dan to look for underlying problems rather than focus on surface symptoms; his military background helps Dan understand the importance of teamwork and empowerment; and Dan’s common sense tells him change must happen in small, manageable bites.
