Frequently asked questions

A microcredential is a qualification that demonstrates your knowledge in an in-demand discipline or topic. These accessible courses are quick, focused explorations so that you walk away with in-demand agile skills without a significant time commitment.

Scrum Alliance microcredentials are:

  • Lifelong: They do not expire
  • Highly focused on a topic or skill
  • Granted after you complete a course of 8 hours or less
  • May be delivered live online, in-person, or with on-demand interactive content

Compare that to Scrum Alliance certifications, which:

  • Expire after 2 years and require earning SEUs and paying a renewal fee in order to remain active
  • Are a broad exploration of a topic that often equips you with multiple new skills and approaches to leverage at work
  • Granted after you complete a multi-day course
  • Delivered live online or in person

A microcredential is a standalone qualification. Microcredentials do not add up to or lead to a certification.

Microcredentials are a great way to add on to your existing skill set. For example, the capabilities you showcase with a Certified ScrumMaster badge are bolstered by an AI for Scrum Masters microcredential, for example. Having both shows that you are a scrum master committed to growing your abilities.

Scrum Alliance microcredentials are self-contained learning experiences independent from the material covered in certification courses or any other offering. You can complete microcredentials and certifications and you will walk away with unique learnings from each.

Scrum Alliance microcredentials are not introductions to certification courses. You can complete one or more microcredentials independently of any certifications and you'll have gained in-demand professional skills you can apply at work immediately.

Scrum Alliance microcredentials do not expire and you will not need to renew your microcredential.

If you are a new or returning member and you received a membership when you registered for a microcredential course, then that membership will expire in two years. You can renew it in a couple of different ways:

  • By earning any Scrum Alliance certification
  • Paying to renew your membership when it expires

If you are a new or returning member, you receive a two-year membership with Scrum Alliance when you register for any microcredential course. This membership entitles you to discounts to Global and Regional Scrum Gatherings, access to the Comparative Agility improvement platform, and networking opportunities with User Groups.

If you are a current member with Scrum Alliance, meaning you have one or more active certifications, your membership will not be extended or renewed as a result of completing a microcredential course; however, you do get to take the on-demand microcredential courses at a discounted rate and will earn SEUs for completing the microcredential.
